Toshiba SD-4990The Toshiba SD-4990 is the kind of upconverting progressive scan DVD player that should be the center piece of your home theater system…    Well it should be…

The Toshiba Sd-4990 comes with all of the bells and whistles like HDMI output, Divx playback, plays mp3s and WMA. Yes, it runs 1080i and 720. Five minutes into testing out this bad boy, the DVD I poped in mysteriously paused. It only lasted a few seconds before it started playing again. At first I thought it was something wrong with the DVD, 2 DVD’s later and looking through the Amazon User reviews, it isn’t uncommon with this player to pause and start again.

DIVX playback is great. Divx 5.1 is supported so quality good… one of the better looking DIVX players ever used.

Overall if it wasn’t for the pause issue, this would be a great DVD… Hopefully Toshiba can figure out a firmware upgrade.

OVERALL grade: D+ Great DIVX player, terrible at playing DVD’s

True does need firmware upgrade, doubt toshiba will be supplying one as unit has been archived by manufacturer, anythow since i only paid $40 for it at a discount store why not take a chance. went to toshiba website, download firmware and created update disc. power on unit and incert disc, replied start update and could hear disc reading, disc stopped reading after a min or two. update message still on screen, gave it a couple of minutes, popped out disc, power off/power on put in move alien, palyed perfect, tried a divx movie, perfect again, no features lost and picture is graet through HDMI connector. ooops forgot to mention the firmware used was for thd sd-4000 which is available on toshiba site.

The player is good. I like its features and remote control. As for good things to say about what I like to have all levels of video and audio inputs. I like that you can select the level of resolution. For me I have a Samsung DLP TV and I can really see the difference in image quality.

I bought this DVD player one of the reasons. To take advantage of the HDMI output cable, I purchased a few months. I bought a 32-inch 720 HDTV, and hope that the player will get at least half way to my HD. Or B – rays.
